The Benefits of Saw Palmetto

The Saw Palmetto is a single type of tree that is classified as the species of Serenoa. Known widely as the saw palmetto it shows up very often for medicinal uses. Particularly known for hair care products, the species shows up very often in other types of non-traditional or herbal medicines as well. The benefits of the saw palmetto extracts are currently still being investigated although it is widely accepted to be a healthful substance for use in many ways.

A very small palm tree, it won’t reach much taller than about 6 feet, and lives primarily in the coastal areas. It is a very long lived tree, although it is also very slow to grow. The saw palmetto trees of Florida have been known to live as long as five hundred to seven hundred years of age.

The saw palmetto offers fruits that are very rich in essential fatty acids and have been proven to be helpful in hair loss along with other parts of the human body. The benefits of saw palmetto are not yet completely clear but among their other properties is the ability to be beneficial to the urinary tract.

Extract from the fruit of the saw palmetto have been studied widely to be used for the treatment of diseases and infections of the human urinary tract. Those same extracts have also been helpful in treating other medical conditions when used by traditional medical practice.

Early on studies that were done of the fruit extracts of the S. repens showed them to be helpful in treating the hyperplasia of the prostate gland in men, while they were excellent in treatment of the urinary tract issues.

Those studies suggested that they offered mild to moderate improvement in the symptoms of the urinary tracts, as well as increasing or helping with the flow. The extracts of the saw palmetto do seem to be proving that they are helpful in many ways to the human body, and with further testing we may see even further benefits of the saw palmetto fruit extract showing up.
