In my twenty five years of being in and around sales, selling and advertising, it surprises me how several little business homeowners don't have somebody working on business development. Many owners and managers I've met should be the "biz dev" person however just do not have the desire or really understand what to do. I suppose this comes back to a few things, fear of sales, pride, and/or social interaction. In different words they give the impression of being at themselves as the President of their little business and are unwilling to go out and pound the pavement for a few hours every week. Some even use the excuse of being tooo busy, but constantly whine concerning how unhealthy business is.
Several a sales person I come back across is held in chasing once the following sale, wasting so a lot of time during the day instead of constantly developing and cultivating a large pipeline of prospects. I see them reading the paper, surfing the net or standing around yackin' about the weather and recession. These actions show laziness, lack of focus, and want or unwillingness to venture out. In other words they don't seem to be hungry enough. If you're employed around individuals like this, I'd advocate that you just step faraway from the pack and build a positive change.
Whether or not your business is online or offline, business development should be an integral half of your sales and promoting plans.
What can you are doing to boost your business development skills?
1. Learn the art of cultivating relationships. Read books, hear CDs and then take what you learn to shine your individuals skills. Develop and use personal relationship selling (PRM) to raised your relationships.
2. Get concerned in the industry, not just the companies you're trying to engage with. If you are tuned in, the opportunities may come your way. If you are tuned out, then they will pass you by.
